You can't cage Nic
What comes to mind when you hear the name Nic Cage?
Do you think Oscar winner?
Do you think, Hollywood royalty because of his relation to Francis Ford Coppola?
Or do you think man who can't say no to any script that lands in his lap?
The answer is somewhere in between.
The Elvis loving, two castle owning actor has over one hundred screen credits and Odyssey Cinemas wants to show our appreciation.
Here at Odyssey Cinemas we decided to dip into his extensive back catalogue. We picked out four favourites. The four films chosen are some that you've heard of and some that should be better known.
Here's what we have for you:
Wicker Man (2006)- Nic Cage remade the 1973 cult classic with a feminist twist. There aralso some downright bizarre choices. Featuring such iconic lines as "Step away from the bicycle" and "Oh no not the bees! Not the bees! Ahhhh they're stinging me!". This is such a strange big budget film that it has to be seen to be bee-lieved.
Raising Arizona - Movie serendipity right here. Cage and the Coen brothers were cool and on the rise when they teamed up for this mad cap comedy. Cage plays a repeat offender who along with cop Holly Hunter kidnap a child to bring up as their own. In the hands of other filmmakers this could be a dark drama. The genius of Cage and the Coens is they transform it into a a living breathing Looney Tunes cartoon.
Vampires Kiss- This is my personal favourite of the line up. It's a film that changes each time I give it a watch. Sometimes it's a hilarious comedy. On other viewings it's a character study about a lonely person cut off from the superficial world around him. Nic plays a Wall Street yuppie who may or may not be a vampire. This film is where you can first see the seeds of Nic Cage's acting style. You see the influence of silent cinema actors like Lon Chaney. Considered a miss step in his early career it should now be appreciated as a brave experiment from an actor willing to push boundaries.
Face/Off- We couldn't not include this now could we? This is pure unadulterated joy from start to finish. Nic Cage at the height of his action hero phase and John Woo hitting the high notes of operatic action. A ridiculous premise has John Travolta and Nic Cage swapping faces. A deadly game of cat and mouse ensues. It's sad that for as silly as the film is nothing like this would never get made today. Unless they're wearing spandex of course.
